Wenger Fooled By False Report, Mistakenly Congratulates George Weah On Liberia Election Win

Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger has seemingly been the victim of false reports, after rumours made the round that former football star George Weah had won Liberia’s presidential election – even though the final results have not yet been announced.

It is understood that Wenger wrongly congratulated his former player for winning the Liberian presidential election on Thursday.

Unfortunately for the 67-year-old French tactician, the results have not been announced.

Wenger, who coached the 51-year-old footballer-turned-politician at Monaco between 1988 and 1992, had said in his pre-Watford press conference:

“I would like to congratulate one of my former players, who became president of Liberia, George Weah.
“It is not often that you have a former player who becomes a president of a country and so well done Georgie and I would say just for him to keep his enthusiasm and his desire to learn and to win.”

Mr Weah was among 20 presidential candidates in Tuesday’s election.

The former Fifa World Footballer of the Year failed in his two previous attempts but is one of the front-runners to replace President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

However, most analysts expect it to go to a second round, as a candidate needs more than 50% of the votes for outright victory.

But there have been false reports of Mr Weah’s victory circulating on social media.
