From House Help To Celebrity Photographer, Anny Robert’s Lens
If you own an Instagram or a Twitter account, you would have heard of Anny Robert.
From the masterful portrait shots to edgy shots of celebrities such as M.I, Chris Attoh, Muna, Fela Makafui, Lola Rae, Noble Igwe to name a few. His head shots are unmistakable and can easily be spotted from miles away.
The photographer who has over time garnered respect and acclaim in the profession performs an act of kindness. What better way to step into the month of love than to shoot an absolute stranger for free?
The girl who was captured in these spectacular shots was Amaka; A house help who had been dreaming of becoming a model and practiced often in front of the mirror as her only source of motivation. Growing up in dire poverty, she recounts going days without food and water in the village, she describes her displaced siblings who she hasn’t seen in years as they had gone on to become maids in the major cities to avoid starving to death. She also opted to move to Lagos in search of a life, any kind of life.
Her modelling dreams would become a reality when Anny Robert visited a friend meaning to drop off a birthday gift. Amaka unwittingly walked past him to her Aunt’s flat with a crate of eggs on her head dressed down in a black vest and jeans; an idea was birthed!
Anny couldn’t quite place what was so endearing about her but as he studied her profile while he knocked, he decided he wanted to take a few portrait shots of her.
He asked her to come to his studio but she shyly declined stating she wasn’t allowed and had no money but he noticed the glint in her eyes. He informed his friend who in turn took on liability for Amaka and made sure she got to Anny’s studio and back.
