Adele Breaks Her Award In Half Says It Truly Belongs To Beyoncé, Grammy 2017
The star of the night, Adele won the Grammy Awards for Best Record and Best Album among others.
Receiving her Best Record award for ‘Hello‘ the British artist paid tribute to the ‘Formation’ singer, as well as to her manager, whom she said she loved “like a father”.
Moments later, when she was brought back to stage, in scenes reminiscent of Mean Girls, Adele broke her Grammy for Album of the Year in half, as she declared that Beyoncé’s Lemonade was a more deserving winner than her own 25.
“I can’t possibly accept this award,” she said during her acceptance speech. “The Lemonade album was just so monumental, Beyoncé. It was so monumental and well thought-out and beautiful and soul-bearing… we appreciate that. All of us artists here adore you. You are our light.”
She later added backstage: “I thought it was her year. What the fuck does she have to do to win Album of the Year?”
Adele remains one of the night’s biggest winners, as she won five prizes in all, including three of the top four: Best album, song of the year and record of the year – the latter two both rewarding her 2015 comeback single, Hello.
While Beyonce took home best urban contemporary album and best music video, for the politically-charged Formation.
The Lemonade snub was clearly as much of a shock to her as it will be to those who saw Lemonade as one of the best works Beyonce has produced in years.
Most people believed that Beyonce would scoop the biggest award in music for her concept album, which was consistently named as the best album of the year by fans and critics alike.
